Residents Urge Gradual Millage Hike and Help for Fixed-Income Homeowners
Three residents addressed Camden County commissioners Thursday morning during the first public hearing on the tentative 2026 millage rates.
Ken Jelly of St. Marys said older residents on fixed incomes face rising costs for groceries, fuel, insurance, home maintenance and property taxes, and asked whether programs exist to help when they cannot cover the county bill.
Paula Joy, who said she lives on Old Jefferson Highway, urged the board to phase any increase — "half this year and half next year" — rather than take a full jump at once while trying to restore a 25% fund balance.
Mary Brown of Kingsland said commissioners should poll residents downtown and in shopping centers about a millage increase, arguing people also want answers on issues such as data centers, water and electricity.
After public comment, a commissioner thanked speakers and encouraged residents to review earlier budget hearings for context. The board then adjourned the public hearing on a motion, second and voice vote.
